2016 Friends of the Lake 5K Road Race & Walk Recap

The Friends of the Lake 5K Road Race & Walk on Saturday, March 26, 2016 drew a record number of registrants, with a total of 271 runner and walkers.

Tom McCormack from Jonesborough, Tenn. came in first place with a time of 17:59. Kevin Fitzgerald from Waynesville received second place, and Timothy Barham of Lake Junaluska came in third.

Runners and walkers of all skill levels joined the road race and walk, which took place along the walking trail at Lake Junaluska. The Easter bunny cheered from the sidelines.

Friends of the Lake has raised more than $13,000 in 2016. All proceeds go to the annual maintenance and improvement of the walking trail and other recreation opportunities at Lake Junaluska. The annual cost of maintaining the grounds and recreation facilities is more than $250,000.

Gifts to the Friends of the Lake help Lake Junaluska continue to be a beloved place where the community can enjoy the walking trail, gardens, and breathtaking vistas. Come celebrate Easter at Lake Junaluska and join us for the annual Friends of the Lake 5K Road Race & Walk. The race is part of the Lake Junaluska's Saturday Easter celebration.

The Friends of the Lake 5K Road Race & Walk is a charitable event to support the recreation opportunities of Lake Junaluska through the Friends of the Lake program. 100% of the proceeds for this event go to the annual maintenance and improvement of the recreation areas at Lake Junaluska which annually costs over $250,000. By participating in this year's Friends of the Lake 5K Road Race & Walk, you will also become a member of the Friends of the Lake program.

Race Details

Where: Lake Junaluska Conference and Retreat Center - Nanci Weldon Gymnasium

Length: 5K Road Race (9:00 a.m.); 5K Walk (9:05 a.m.); half-mile Kids Fun Run for kids ages 10 and under (10:00 a.m.)

Course: Download the Race Map (.pdf) to view the course. The 5K Road Race & Walk will begin and end at the Weldon Gymnasium, which is located behind the Bethea Welcome Center.

Awards: The awards ceremony commences upon conclusion of the race. Awards will be given to the top three male and female winners in each age category. Door prizes will be awarded upon conclusion of the race.

When is the race?
Saturday, April 15, 2017
5K Road Race (9:00 a.m.); 5K Walk (9:05 a.m.); half-mile Kids Fun Run for kids ages 10 and under (10:00 a.m.)

Do I need to pre-register?
We would prefer as many advance registrations as possible; however you will be able to register the day of the race. By pre-registering, you will receive a lower entry fee. 

Can I register the day of the race?
Yes. Race day registration will be open from 7:30-8:30 a.m. at the Nanci Weldon Open Air Gym.

How much is the registration fee?
To be announced.

How can I pay for the registration fee?
You can pay the registration fee by cash, check or credit card. If paying by check, make it payable to Lake Junaluska Assembly.

Is there a fee for the Kids Fun Run?
No. The Kids Fun Run is free to children ages 10 and under.The fun run will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the start line near the gym, run to the intersection of Weldon Way and Lakeshore Drive, and return to the start line.

Will I receive a t-shirt?
T-shirts will be given to those who pre-register for the 5K & Walk by a date to be announced.

Will the course be marked?
Yes. The course for the 5K & Walk will be the same course and it will be marked with chalk, cones, etc. You will begin and end at the Nanci Weldon Open Air Gym. Most of the course will follow the walking path around the Lake.

Will there be awards for the winners?
Yes. Awards will be given to the top three male and female winners in each age category. Those categories are broken down into approximately 5-year ranges (see registration form for specific age groups).

Can I bring my dog?
No. For everyone’s safety, we ask that you please do not bring your dog.

Can I bring a stroller for my child?
Strollers will be allowed during the Walk ONLY. For the safety of those running, we ask that you please do not bring strollers for the 5K run.

Can I bring my bicycle?
No. For everyone’s safety, we ask that you please do not bring your bicycle.

What is the registration fee being used for?
This year’s 5K Run & Walk is a charitable event to support Lake Junaluska. 100 percent of the proceeds for this event will go towards the annual maintenance and improvements of the recreation areas at Lake Junaluska.
