The Friends of the Lake 5K Road Race & Walk on Saturday, April 15, 2017 drew a record number of registrants, with a total of 273 runner and walkers.
Andrew Hammel from Clyde, N.C. came in first place with a time of 16:21. Isaiah King from Harrisonburg, Va. received second place, and Andrew Thrasher of Waynesville, N.C. came in third.
Runners and walkers of all skill levels joined the road race and walk, which took place along the walking trail at Lake Junaluska. The Easter bunny cheered from the sidelines.
All proceeds go to the annual maintenance and improvement of the walking trail and other recreation opportunities at Lake Junaluska. The annual cost of maintaining the grounds and recreation facilities is more than $250,000.

The Friends of the Lake 5K Road Race & Walk is a charitable event to support the recreation opportunities of Lake Junaluska through the Friends of the Lake program. 100 percent of the profit from this event goes to the annual maintenance and improvement of the recreation areas at Lake Junaluska which annually costs over $250,000. Length: 5K Road Race (9:00 a.m.); 5K Walk (9:05 a.m.); half-mile Kids Fun Run for kids ages 10 and under (10:00 a.m.)

Awards: The awards ceremony commences upon conclusion of the race. Awards will be given to the top three male and female winners in each age category.

When is the race?

5K Road Race (9:00 a.m.); 5K Walk (immediately following the runner start); half-mile Kids Fun Run for kids ages 10 and under (10:00 a.m.)
Do I need to pre-register?
We would prefer as many advance registrations as possible; however you will be able to register the day of the race. By pre-registering, you will receive a lower entry fee.
Can I register the day of the race?
Yes. Race day registration will be open from 7:30-8:30 a.m. at the Nanci Weldon Open Air Gym.
How much is the registration fee?
How can I pay for the registration fee?
You can pay the registration fee by cash, check or credit card. If paying by check, make it payable to Lake Junaluska Assembly.
Is there a fee for the Kids Fun Run?
No. The Kids Fun Run is free to children ages 10 and under. The fun run will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the start line near the gym, run to the intersection of Weldon Way and Lakeshore Drive, and return to the start line.
Will I receive a t-shirt?
T-shirts will be given to those who pre-register. Date TBA.
Will the course be marked?
Yes. The course for the 5K & Walk will be the same course and it will be marked with chalk, cones, etc. You will begin and end at the Nanci Weldon Open Air Gym. Most of the course will follow the walking path around the Lake.
Will there be awards for the winners?
Yes. Awards will be given to the top three male and female winners in each age category. Those categories are broken down into approximately 5-year ranges (see registration form for specific age groups).
Can I bring my dog?
No. For everyone’s safety, we ask that you please do not bring your dog.
Can I bring a stroller for my child?
Strollers will be allowed during the Walk ONLY. For the safety of those running, we ask that you please do not bring strollers for the 5K run.
Can I bring my bicycle?
No. For everyone’s safety, we ask that you please do not bring your bicycle.
What is the registration fee being used for?
This year’s 5K Run & Walk is a charitable event to support Lake Junaluska. 100 percent of the proftit from this event will go towards the annual maintenance and improvements of the recreation areas at Lake Junaluska.
