June 29 - July 1, 2012Contemporary Native American Social Justice Issues: A Roundtable
Dialogue and Implications for the United Methodist Church - Considered novel
and practical, this event is designed to bring together national Native leaders
and United Methodist leaders for dialogue and discourse to address social
justice issues that Native communities are facing and how these concerns and
matters impact The United Methodist Church. Such issues include racism, tribal
sovereignty, socio-economic status, federal recognition, lack of representation
of Native people in key positions and mascots.
Time will include plenary
sessions, a focus on means of advocacy and greater support, increased awareness
of gifts Native people offer The Church, and possible hands-on, concrete
solutions for increased opportunities for inclusivity in leadership
positions.
