October 1-3, 2010“God’s Warrior: The Man, The Christian, The Native:” As a society, we are busy, overwhelmed by responsibilities, debt, and tremendous social issues such as racism and health concerns. These issues are further exacerbated in the Native American community of men. SEJANAM, the Southeastern Jurisdictional Agency for Native American Ministries, and Lake Junaluska Conference and Retreat Center will be hosting “God’s Warrior: The Man, The Christian, The Native,” the first ever Native American Men’s Conference on October 1-3, 2010. Kicking off the event is Bishop Alfred Gwinn, Jr., Resident Bishop of the North Carolina Annual Conference. The keynote luncheon speaker is Rev. Dr. Michael Cummings, Executive Director of the Burnt Swamp Baptist Association and Past President of the Southern Baptist State Convention.
Additional speakers include, Dr. Negiel Bigpond, Executive Director of Two Rivers Training Center, Bixby Oklahoma, Rev. Dr. Tim McClendon, Rev. Dr. Kenneth Locklear, Senior Pastor, Prospect UMC, Rev. Dr. Milford Oxendine, Pastor, Chadbourn UMC, and Chief Kenneth Adams, Upper Mattaponi Indians of Virginia.
This event is designed to bring together national Native American leaders and United Methodist Church leaders for dialogue and increased understanding about issues and concerns facing the Native American community and to begin developing a framework and support for ministry and covenant relationships.
We hope the Native American Men’s Conference will raise awareness about society’s roles that affect Native Americans as men, as Christians, and as United Methodists. Participants will have an opportunity to be in dialogue with other Native American men and United Methodist leaders to examine ways to strengthen each other while providing for spiritual broadening and understanding.
