Save the Lake Junaluska Bridge

10/03/2017

LAKE JUNALUSKA, N.C. – The Lake Junaluska bridge has served as a vehicular route and pedestrian walkway for more than 100 years. In 2016, the bridge was closed to vehicular traffic due to deterioration of the bridge’s steel support beams. This summer, the Board of Trustees voted to restore the bridge to vehicular and pedestrian traffic, a project estimated to cost more than $1 million.

Renewal of the bridge will maintain the full loop of the walking trail, make it possible to drive completely around the lake and restore one of the lake’s historic landmarks. Most importantly, it will preserve these important experiences for future generations.

“The focus of restoring the bridge is to ensure the safety of the community as well as the longevity of this great resource,” said Jack Ewing, executive director of Lake Junaluska.

Deconstruction of the bridge has already begun. The pedestrian walkway will remain open throughout the project unless it is necessary to close it for short periods for safety reasons.

“The bridge is the connecting link between the north and south side of a great community,” said Snookie Brown, part-time resident at Lake Junaluska. “It encourages people to connect, to exercise and to enjoy the beauty. Driving around the lake carries the same impact as walking around the lake, especially for those who can no longer walk the path. The bridge is part of the personality of Lake Junaluska, which is why it is important for all to support its restoration.”
