LAKE JUNALUSKA, N.C – The Lake Junaluska Conference and Retreat Center will continue its 2011 Summer Worship Series, “The World is My Parish,” on July 3. Bishop Richard Wilke, the current Bishop in Residence at Southwestern College in Kansas, will serve as guest preacher.
“We are excited to host this prominent United Methodist Bishop as our guest preacher for the Summer Series,” said Dr. Jack Ewing, Executive Director of Lake Junaluska. “The Bishop’s sermon topic, “A Famine in the Land” appeals for a resurgence of the historic Wesley class meetings to help new Christians discover deeper faith. Bishop Wilke’s appeal to the roots of faith fits nicely with our Wesleyan-themed series, “The World is my Parish,” a line attributed to John Wesley, one of the founders of Methodism.”
Author of the groundbreaking book, And Are We Yet Alive?, Wilke spent thirty years in ministry serving rural, suburban, and university churches in Kansas. He was elected to the episcopacy in 1984 and served the Arkansas Area for twelve years before retiring in 1996. Together with his wife, Julia, he coordinated, designed, and wrote the DISCIPLE Bible study, with nearly two million graduates in more than 10,000 congregations in 30 denominations. The DISCIPLE series is now available in German, Korean, Spanish, and Chinese.
This service is supported by The Ward Preaching Endowment, created in 2006 by Dr. Erle and Rev. Mary Peacock in memory of Dr. Peacock’s mother, Vera Ward Peacock, and her Lake Junaluska family, to enable and foster outstanding preaching at Lake Junaluska.
Wilke will preach at Stuart Auditorium at 10:45 a.m. at Lake Junaluska Conference and Retreat Center on July 2, 2011. All services are free and open to the public and will be streamed live every Sunday at www.lakejunaluska.com/streaming.
