"Paul's Letters and Their Communities" - Archaeology can help us understand the character of a particular community. Who were the residents of that community? What gods did they honor in their temples? What were the economic and political forces there? And knowing the character of a community helps us understand the nature of the early Christian church established there. What sorts of folks were the early members of the church? What religious practices were they used to? What problems arose in a particular church because of its location? Paul's letters address particular communities in the early church and we can get a much better idea of Paul's teaching when we have a better picture of who he is addressing.
