Lake Junaluska Summer Youth Events

Note: In consideration of the health and well-being of those who attend and lead the summer youth programs, we have canceled large-group summer youth events. However, we encourage youth groups to retreat together in small groups at Lake Junaluska this summer, and we look forward to worshipping with you this fall and winter. For more information on small-group retreats, contact Wilson Booth, Director of Youth Programs, at or 828-454-6727.

Lake Junaluska Summer Youth Events draw diverse youth groups from multiple states. The events are large enough to be lively and exciting, while never so big that youth feel lost or anonymous. Our prayer is that each participant feels seen and known by Lake Junaluska’s youth ministry staff, small group and workshop leaders, other youth and most importantly by God. The program is geared toward 6th through 12th graders.

Theme for 2020 Summer Youth Events

"I am the vine; you are the branches." - John 15:5

Join us this summer as we center on John 15:5, "I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit."

Together, we'll grow closer to God as we explore the stages of spiritual nourishment, from rooting ourselves in Scripture to blossoming in service to Christ.

What happens at a Summer Youth Event?

Youth Worship together during the Summer Youth Events at Lake Junaluska

Evening and Morning Large-Group Sessions

A half-hour of energizers, skits and games is followed by about an hour of worship led by bands and engaging preachers and speakers. Our speakers tend to be United Methodists accustomed to speaking in cross-denominational settings.

Each youth group has the opportunity to add mission work to their Lake Junaluska Summer Youth Events experience

Mission Work

Groups coming for Mission Week July 20-24 will participate in 205 days of mission work.  For the Summer Youth Events July 15-19, groups who register and pay the deposit by the deadline and pay a nominal per person mission fee will be assigned a 2-hour afternoon mission project on the specified date below.

  • Event 4 – Mission Work Date: Thursday, July 16. Registration and Deposit Deadline: July 1, 2020
  • Mission Week – Mission Work Dates: July 20-24. Space is Limited
Small groups called Family Groups are part of the Summer Youth Events at Lake Junaluska

Family Groups

Youth are grouped into “families” of middle- or high-schoolers where they work though scriptural themes in an intentional and fun way. Groups are led by staff or selected returning group leaders. Adult youth group leaders attend a group tailored for their unique needs.

Workshops are offered during the Summer Youth Events at Lake Junlauska

Upon arrival, youth and leaders sign up for one workshop that inspires them to engage with scripture in a new way – whether that be through art, music movement, drama, history, culture, recreation, prayer, gardening or something else. See a sample of workshops available - workshops subject to change.

Adventure and free time are part of every Summer Youth Event at Lake Junaluska

Recreation and Adventure

The time between lunch and dinner is free for swimming and boating at Lake Junaluska or for going offsite for whitewater rafting, swimming in local rivers and waterfalls, ziplining or exploring Asheville.  Most groups stay onsite the afternoon of our single-elimination volleyball tournament. Start practicing now!

Lake Junaluska partners with local providers for whitewater rafting, ziplining and Biltmore Estate. If your group would like to add any of these activities, please call 800-222-4930 to book! If you'd like to arrange your own activities, CLICK HERE for a list of area attractions.

Enjoy concrete cornhole boards, 9 Square in the Air, a Gaga Ball pit as well as eno pods and hammocks around the West End.

Vespers happen during the Lake Junaluska Summer Youth Events

Just before Quiet Hours, a youth staffer meets with your youth group to share his or her faith journey and encourage reflection on the day’s events.
