Lake Junaluska Summer Youth Event VI

July 10-14

Each of these youth group events offers morning and evening sessions with high energy worship, guest preachers and workshops! Events are led by a team of college students, guest speakers, and worship bands. The program is geared towards 6th through 12th graders.

Lake Junaluska Summer Youth Events draw diverse youth groups from multiple states. The events are large enough to be lively and exciting, while never so big that youth feel lost or anonymous. Our prayer is that each participant feels seen and known by Lake Junaluska’s youth ministry staff, small group and workshop leaders, other youth and most importantly by God.

Afternoons are free for groups to plan rafting trips, do mission work or enjoy the swimming pool or boats at Lake Junaluska.

Kevin Wright will speak during the Summer Youth Events at Lake Junaluska

Speaker: Kevin Wright

Rev. Kevin Wright (UMC) is the chief program officer at Urban Arts Partnership, a dynamic non-profit organization that improves academic outcomes, graduation rates, artistic growth and social-emotional learning for underserved students. He was formerly the executive minister of programs at The Riverside Church in New York City where he oversaw the congregation’s efforts to serve the poor, help people become followers of Jesus and create spaces where people could form meaningful community together.

He has worked in a variety of church and campus ministry settings across the country. He earned his M. Div. from Duke University and a bachelor’s degree from Indian Wesleyan University.

Jimmy Atkins will lead worship during a Summer Youth Event at Lake Junaluska

Worship Band: Jimmy Atkins and the Light ’Em Ups

Jimmy Atkins hails from western NC, where he is a worship pastor at a local church, a songwriter, and a storyteller. A frequent conference speaker and band leader, he formerly led the band, Second Hand City. He sings at Lake Junaluska Youth Events “to help point youth in the direction of owning their own faith in God, of knowing who they are, and who they should be, and who they can be. This is something born out of a hope and desire to see them grow up in Jesus.”

Derrick Tennant

Comedian: Derrick Tennant

Derrick Tennant was a promising athlete when a serious injury left him in a coma. Getting on his feet again after brain surgery, years of rehab and life in a wheelchair was not easy. Despite very limited use of his left side, Derrick loves life and "looks on the RIGHT side" of things. He communicates the importance of shifting obstacles in life, work or business into opportunities. He worked hard to overcome physical challenges and now works just as hard to help others overcome trials through his comedy and inspirational speaking.
