Bishop Thomas Bickerton to preach at Lake Junaluska Summer Worship Series

Bishop Thomas Bickerton will be the guest preacher during the Lake Junaluska Summer Worship Series in Stuart Auditorium Sunday August 2. Lake Junaluska offers world class preachers each summer during its annual Summer Worship Series, which is scheduled for Sundays through August 9.

Bishop Thomas Bickerton was elected bishop and assigned to the Pittsburgh Area where he is currently serving. He is married to Sally Forbes Bickerton. Originally from West Virginia, Bishop holds a B.A. in Sociology/Psychology from West Virginia Wesleyan College, a M.Div. from Duke Divinity School, and a D.Min. from United Theological School. He is actively involved in the United Methodist Global Health Initiative's Imagine No Malaria Campaign and serves on a number of other boards and agencies.

Each Sunday during the Worship Series, Holy Communion Service will be held at 8:30 a.m. in Memorial Chapel. Presiding over the service will be our new Dean of the Chapel, Rev. Susan Giles. These morning services will continue through August 9. Adult Sunday School will be offered at 9:30 a.m. at the Harrell Center, followed by traditional morning worship at 10:45 a.m. in historic Stuart Auditorium, with guest preachers. Inspirational worship music will be provided by The Lake Junaluska Singers. Childcare is offered at the 10:45 a.m. service for children six months old and older at the Wilson Children’s Complex, 21 Shackford Hall Road.

Each Monday through August 3, a Taize Service Of Prayer and Song will be held at 8 p.m. in Memorial Chapel. This service, Martin said, is a contemplative service in a casual atmosphere, modeled after the Taize Community in France, where participants engage in simple repetitive songs, scripture, candlelight, and silence. “The Taize service offers space to slow down from our busy lives and spend time listening to God,” Martin said.

Guest preachers include Dr. Jody Seymour, August 9. To find out more about the 2015 Sunday Summer Worship Series or Lake Junaluska, please visit
