Celebrate Independence Day at Lake Junaluska

06/01/2016

Lake Junaluska invites everyone to its annual Independence Day Celebrations, featuring concerts, a parade a barbecue picnic and fireworks show.

Bluegrass sensation, Balsam Range, performs on Saturday, July 2 in Stuart Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. The Lake Junaluska Singers will take the stage Sunday, July 3 and Monday, July 4, with a, special July 4 set on Monday evening. Tickets are now on sale for all three concerts.

The parade will occur July 4 at 11 a.m. It will start at Lambuth Inn and end at the Nanci Weldon Gym where the barbecue lunch will take place. This long-time Lake Junaluska tradition represents the spirit of Independence Day. Parade participants will ride or walk alongside decorated vehicles and floats. This year’s parade theme is “Discover America,” which encourages participants to celebrate their favorite places across the U.S. Registration is open for anyone who wants to have a float in the parade; participation is free. To sign up for the parade, contact Liz Boyd: eboyd@lakejunaluska.com.

As the parade ends at Nanci Weldon Gym, everyone is invited to a barbecue lunch with a number of exciting entertainers and activities. Award-winning country, bluegrass and Americana musician Darren Nicholson will play for the crowd, while kids enjoy inflatable bounce houses, face painting and balloon art. The barbecue picnic will include sandwiches, baked beans, coleslaw, cookies, chips, drink and watermelon. The barbecue lunch is $8 for adults, $5 for kids 6-11 and free for children under 6.

Other special activities include two waterski shows, special worship services and guided boat tours on the Cherokee IV. On Saturday, July 2 family-friendly activities include an Anything That Floats race on the lake, Family Olympics competition and a garden tour. Everyone is invited to these events.

The festivities conclude with a fireworks show at 9:45 p.m. on Monday, July 4. As the fireworks happen, the Lake Junaluska Singers will perform the national anthem from a boat on the lake.
