Dr. Lauren Winner to preach at Lake Junaluska Summer Worship Series

07/07/2015

Dr. Lauren Winner will be the guest preacher during the Lake Junaluska Summer Worship Series in Stuart Auditorium Sunday, July 12. Lake Junaluska offers world class preachers each summer during its annual Summer Worship Series, which is scheduled for Sundays through August 9.

Lauren F. Winner is the author of numerous books, including Girl Meets God and Mudhouse Sabbath. Her recent memoir, Still: Notes on a Mid-faith Crisis, has been named a “Best Book of 2012″ in the religion category by Publishers Weekly and a 2013 Book Award winner in the spirituality category by Christianity Today.

Her latest book, Wearing God: Clothing, Laughter, Fire, and Other Overlooked Ways of Meeting God, was released in March of 2015. She has appeared on PBS’s Religion & Ethics Newsweekly and has written for The New York Times Book Review, The Washington Post Book World, Publishers Weekly, Books and Culture, and Christianity Today.

Winner has degrees from Duke, Columbia, and Cambridge universities, and holds a Ph.D. in history. The former book editor for Beliefnet, Lauren teaches at Duke Divinity School, and lives in Durham, North Carolina. Lauren travels extensively to lecture and teach. During the academic year of 2007-2008, she was a visiting fellow at the Center for the Study of Religion at Princeton University, and during the academic year of 2010-2011, she was a visiting fellow at the Institute of Sacred Music at Yale University. When she’s home, you can usually find her curled up, on her couch or screen porch, with a good novel.

Lauren will be returning to Lake Junaluska September 17-19, 2015 for the Women's Retreat with Dr. Lauren Winner, part of the Lake Junaluska Signature Series. She will be joined by the folk and jazz inspired worship leader, Martha Basset from Centenary UMC in Winston-Salem. All women welcome. Find out more at www.lakejunaluska.com/signature-series.

This Sunday, July 12, marks the first Holy Communion Service of the summer at 8:30 a.m. in Memorial Chapel. Presiding over the service will be our new Dean of the Chapel, Rev. Susan Giles. These morning services will continue through August 9.

Each Sunday during the Worship Series, adult Sunday School will be offered at 9:30 a.m. at the Harrell Center, followed by traditional morning worship at 10:45 a.m. in historic Stuart Auditorium, with guest preachers. Inspirational worship music will be provided by The Lake Junaluska Singers. Childcare is offered at the 10:45 a.m. service for children six months old and older at the Wilson Children’s Complex, 21 Shackford Hall Road.

Each Monday, a Taize Service Of Prayer And Song will be held at 8 p.m. in Memorial Chapel. This service, Martin said, is a contemplative service in a casual atmosphere, modeled after the Taize Community in France, where participants engage in simple repetitive songs, scripture, candlelight, and silence. “The Taize service offers space to slow down from our busy lives and spend time listening to God,” Martin said.

Guest preachers include Bishop Richard Looney, July 19; Dr. Derrick-Lewis Noble, July 26; Bishop Thomas Bickerton, August 2; and Dr. Jody Seymour, August 9.
