UPDATE 6/28/21: All Sunday morning worship services part of the Summer Worship Series will be held at the white lakeside tent near Stuart Auditorium. A limited number of chairs will be available under the tent. Attendees also are welcome to bring their own chairs.

LAKE JUNALUSKA, N.C. – All are invited to attend the Summer Worship Series at Lake Junaluska from June 27 to Aug. 1, 2021. The series includes spirited Sunday morning worship services led by inspirational preachers. All services will be held outdoors at the lakeside white tent near Stuart Auditorium at 9 a.m. unless otherwise indicated. Preachers in Residence will also be present at other weekly worship offerings, including evening Vespers and labyrinth prayer walks.

The theme for this year’s Summer Worship Series is “Through the Storm, God Offers Hope for a New Day.”

Summer Worship Series speakers include:

  • June 27: Rev. Dr. Donna Claycomb Sokol, pastor of the Mount Vernon Place United Methodist Church, a historic congregation in Washington, D.C.
  •  July 4: Rev. Dr. Sharon Austin, interim co-district superintendent for the Gulf Central District of the United Methodist Church.
  • July 11: Rev. Roger Dowdy, founder/director of CROSS-PATHS Ministries.
  • July 18: Rev. Dr. Carl Arrington, a recently retired district superintendent of the Appalachian District of the Western North Carolina Conference of The United Methodist Church.
  • July 25: Rev. Rebecca Mathis, director of advancement for Lake Junaluska.
  • Aug. 1: Rev. Dr. Ben Witherington, Amos Professor of New Testament for Doctoral Studies at Asbury Theological Seminary and on the doctoral faculty at St. Andrews University in Scotland.

“The Summer Worship Series is an opportunity for reunion and reawakening,” said Rev. Rebecca Mathis, director of advancement.  “We’ve heard story after story over the past year about how Lake Junaluska has served as a place of Sabbath and sanctuary during a very difficult season and also about how much we’ve missed one another.  What better way to reunite than to gather outdoors in God’s amazing sanctuary to lift up prayers and songs of praise as a community of faith.”

The 2021 Summer Worship Series is a string of worship opportunities that allow friends and families to gather together and worship in a way that has been limited in the past year. Lake Junaluska is working to spiritually reinvigorate those who endured great hardship, mental distress, and other difficulties due to the conditions of the last year.

A limited number of chairs will be available under the tent. Attendees also are welcome to bring their own chairs. To learn more about the Summer Worship Series, visit
