Lake Junaluska Golf Course forming youth golf teams

02/08/2019

Registration is now open for a new PGA Jr. League team forming at Lake Junaluska Golf Course for players age 17 and younger.

The team is open to boys and girls of all skill levels including beginners and will include a division for age 13 and younger and a division for age 14 to 17.

During the season, which runs from March 1 to July 31, the team will host five clinics at the Lake Junaluska Golf Course that cover skills such as putting, chipping and playing as a team.

The team also will participate in five matches to be held at Asheville-area courses and Lake Junaluska. The matches will be a two-person scramble format in which team players work together, hitting the “best ball” of each of their two shots throughout the match.

“The PGA Jr. League offers a relaxed and fun team atmosphere, and we are excited to host a team here this season,” said Charlie Carswell, a PGA-classified golf professional who serves as pro shop manager and golf professional at the Lake Junaluska Golf Course.

“Our course is great for junior golfers and beginners,” said Carswell, team captain who will lead the clinics and coordinate matches. “I started playing golf with my dad here at Lake Junaluska when I was a boy.  What I enjoyed most was the challenge of the game, spending time outside and just spending time together. I hope the players on our team will experience that too.”

The registration fee of $190 includes team practice sessions, matches, home and away jerseys, bag tag, a performance ball cap, performance T-shirt, drawstring bag and access to the PGA Jr. League Merchandise Store.

Carswell said participants also will enjoy additional discounts and opportunities to play at the Lake Junaluska Golf Course.

Clinics will be held on a weekday afternoon to be scheduled based on participants’ availability. Matches will be coordinated once all league teams are formed.

Lake Junaluska Golf Course offers private lessons and clinics for junior golfers as well as families. For junior golfers, Lake Junaluska Golf Course offers 9-hole green fees for $5 and yearly memberships for $150.

Also available at Lake Junaluska is a membership package for four household members that includes golf, tennis, and pool and fitness center passes for $1,650.
