LAKE JUNALUSKA, N.C. – Lake Junaluska invites guests and community members to gather around the Lakeside White Tent on Friday, July 23, at 4:30 p.m. for an evening of gentle and cascading melodies from the talented students of the Summer Harp Academy. The event is free and open to the public.
Founded in 2012, The Summer Harp Academy provides young harpists with the opportunity for an intensive summer study. July 2021 will mark the eighth year of the program with professors Elzbieta Szmyt and Jan Jennings. The Summer Harp Academy provides a diverse range of experiences so that students may learn about many areas of harp, including studying classical and popular music, arranging music for the harp, performing and preparing for auditions, and being a professional harpist. Students participate in daily masterclasses, ensemble rehearsals, lectures and lessons throughout the week-long program. Over the years, The Summer Harp Academy has hosted dozens of students from 17 different states.
Lake Junaluska was recommended to the academy by a student’s parents in the early stages of planning. “Upon our first visit, we quickly saw that Lake Junaluska would provide not only everything we would need in terms of hotels, classrooms and meals, but also would provide a beautiful backdrop along with incredibly hospitable staff,” said Christine Kercheval Valenta, administrative director of The Summer Harp Academy. “Lake Junaluska provides a welcoming and supportive environment so that we may share our music with the community.”
Some seating will be available at the recital at the Lakeside White Tent. Attendees also are encouraged to bring their own chairs. For more information, visit lakejunaluska.com/calendar.
