Lake Junaluska's Fourth of July Celebrations Include Recreational Activities, Meals-To-Go, Golf Tournament, Online Singers Concert and More

Lake Junaluska Conference and Retreat Center has planned a weekend of festive, fun Independence Day Celebrations that allow for small groups and social distancing.

Due to COVID-19, the Independence Day Celebrations July 2-4 will feature events and services that provide quality family-friendly experiences and adhere to social distancing guidelines. The events are part of the conference center's Summer Activities Program, a program that brings Lake Junaluska residents and visitors of all ages together to make memories throughout the season and is made possible in part through charitable giving.

“While COVID-19 has reduced our ability to be together, we are excited that through creative thinking and collaboration we have a variety of wonderful activities for individuals and families to enjoy this Independence Day holiday weekend," said Mike Huber, vice president of programming and group sales at Lake Junaluska.

The Independence Day Celebrations kick off on July 2. Among the weekend's festivities are a BBQ meal-to-go, a golf tournament, an online Lake Junaluska Singers concert, and a floating display of wish lanterns on the lake.

Lake Junaluska's summerlong recreational opportunities, which include lakeside pool passes and canoe, kayak and paddleboard rentals, will also be available. Other low-cost activities include an ice cream social, yoga sessions, kayak races, and kayak, clogging and golf lessons.

The Terrace hotel gets in on the festive spirit on July 3 by serving up pre-ordered and pre-paid BBQ lunches to go. Orders may be called in at 828-454-6661 through noon Thursday, July 2. For more information, visit

The newly-opened The Terrace Bistro, located on the third floor of the hotel, will offer its indoor or outdoor lakeside dining options and orders to go throughout the weekend. The menu offers a variety of salads, soups, sandwiches and homemade desserts. The Bistro is open Wednesday-Sunday for lunch and dinner from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. For more information, visit

Junaluska Gifts & Grounds will also be open for business, offering coffee, sandwiches, ice cream and unique gifts. Located in the Harrell Center, it is open Monday-Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, visit

On July 4, the Lake Junaluska Golf Course will hold its Closest to the Pin Contest throughout the day, the pre-recorded annual Lake Junaluska Singers Independence Day concert will be available online at 7:15 p.m., and a floating display of illuminated lanterns will take place on the lake at 8:45 p.m. The lanterns will serve as a symbol of hope and faith to all.

A pre-recorded traditional worship service will be offered online on July 5 as part of the Summer Activities Program's 2020 Online Summer Worship Series Schedule. The Rev. Dr. Joy Moore, associate professor of Biblical Preaching at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota, will share her message "A More Excellent Way" on the Lake Junaluska website and Lake Junaluska's YouTube channel at 11 a.m. For more information, visit

For guests who wish to spend the holiday weekend on-site, Lake Junaluska offers a two-night Independence Day lodging package July 3-5 that includes boxed continental breakfasts, a Fourth of July BBQ lunch, a lake cruise aboard the Cherokee IV pontoon boat, and a self-guided kayak, canoe or paddleboard excursion.

Due to COVID-19 health concerns and rising infection rates in North Carolina, Lake Junaluska has postponed the fireworks display planned for the Fourth of July to later in 2020 to a date to be determined. The conference center has also canceled the annual Independence Day parade, concerts in Stuart Auditorium, and community picnic and square dance.
