Balsam Range Art of Music Festival

Balsam Range

Balsam Range is a bluegrass and acoustic music group founded in 2007 in Haywood County, N.C. They are the 2018 IBMA "Entertainer of the Year" recipients as well as winning the 2018 IBMA "Male Vocalist of the Year" for Buddy Melton and 2018 IBMA "Bass Player of the Year" for Tim Surrett. Balsam Range consists of five members; on fiddle and lead tenor, Buddy Melton; on mandolin and vocals, Darren Nicholson; on stand up bass, dobro and vocals, Tim Surrett; on guitar and vocals, Caleb Smith; and on banjo, Dr. Marc Pruett. Balsam Range will play both nights of the festival!

Terry Baucom and the Dukes of Drive

Thursday, November 29 | Colonial Theater, Canton NC  | 7 p.m.

A jam packed evening of bluegrass with one of the industry’s all time greats.  Terry Baucom and the Dukes Of Drive will kick off the Art of Music Festival at the incredible Colonial Theater in Canton NC.  Terry Baucom has been one of the most influential artists within the bluegrass genre. It will be a memorable event that will include some special performances by individual members of Balsam Range.  It will be a unique chance to hear Caleb Smith and Tim Surrett performing some individual pieces and styles that have influenced them over the years.  And there may be some special guests!

3-night lodging package holders may choose to attend this show on Thursday night. Tickets to one of the Thursday night shows are included in the package.

It all starts with a song! Join Milan Miller, John Wiggins, Mark Bumgarner and Aaron Biblehauser as Buddy Melton and Darren Nicholson of Balsam Range host an evening of original songs with masters of the songwriting craft. Each of these songwriters have made their mark on the music industry, as well as on Balsam Range.

'SHENANDOAH 30th ANNIVERSARY TOUR' featuring original lead singer Marty Raybon

Shenandoah are a legendary country music band. Formed in 1984, this award-winning band has had 13 number one records and won a coveted Grammy award for the song "Somewhere in the Vicinity of the Heart" which featured guest vocals by Alison Krauss. The band consists of Marty Raybon (lead vocals; acoustic guitar), Mike McGuire (drums; backing vocals), Stan Munsey (keyboards), Jamie Michael (lead guitar; backing vocals), Brad Benge (bass guitar; backing vocals) and Donnie Allen (fiddle; acoustic guitar). Balsam Range is honored to bring Shenandoah to Haywood County and you can expect some pretty fantastic country, bluegrass and gospel influences. 

Terry Baucom's All Star Band

Terry Baucom's All-Star Band

A native of Monroe, North Carolina, Terry Baucom has enjoyed a career in music that started in 1970 with Charlie Moore and continued over the years as a founding member of ground breaking bands like Boone Creek (with Ricky Skaggs and Jerry Douglas), Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, IIIrd Tyme Out and more. Winner of the 2013 IBMA Recorded Event of the Year for "What'll I Do", Baucom currently tours with his own band, "Terry Baucom's Dukes of Drive". A testament to his influence is evident when you listen to countless younger generation banjo players who use Baucom signature licks and emulate his driving technique. 

Joining Terry are Tim Stafford, Frank Solivan, Stuart Duncan and Barry Bales.

For over 30 years The Whitewater Bluegrass Co. has captivated audiences throughout the Southeast with their blend of Bluegrass music, country ballads, mountain swing and down-home humor. With Whitewater, mountain culture is a celebration of music, song and dance.

Chloe Agnew

Chloe Agnew

Chloë Agnew is a singer, songwriter and actress from Dublin, Ireland. Agnew gained fame for her integral part as one of the original (and youngest) members of the internationally acclaimed music group Celtic Woman from the age of 14. Born to Irish entertainer Adéle "Twink" King and Irish oboist David Agnew, Chloë was practically born on the stage and made her first television appearance at just four weeks old. At the age of 24, she was already a musical veteran and, after an illustrious career with the famous ensemble, she embarked on a solo career that has seen her perform all over the world.

The Atlanta Pops Orchestra

Founded in 1945, The orchestra and its musicians play concerts throughout the southeast each year for special events, Community Concert Series and schools and universities. The Pops also accompany many other performances for celebrity artists on tour, seasonal concerts and National and International business conventions.

The Cleverlys at the Balsam Range Art of Music Festival

The Cleverlys

The Cleverlys are a bluegrass family band from the Ozark Mountains, near Cane Spur, Arkansas. They spent their days working on the family farm raising their own food, growing and working hard but having fun. On weekends they had pickens’ with the whole community turning out to listen. The Cleverly Trio was the family band, and the whole family at one time or another has played in the band.  Current members, according to their website, include Digger Cleverly, Ricky Lloyd, Sock Cleverly, Cub Cleverly and DVD Cleverly.

Master Level Workshops -Friday, Nov 30

These are geared toward advanced players looking to hone their skills and learn from the best in the business. Tickets for these workshops will be available soon. Master Level Workshops are separate from the Saturday workshops which are included with lodging packages through Lake Junaluska. Tickets will be on sale at the Balsam Range Art of Music Festival website.

Marketplace/Concessions

A tent will be set up between Stuart Auditorium and the Harrell Center on Friday and Saturday during the festival for bands to sell merchandise, including t-shirts, cds, posters, etc.
